TSC’s new specifications for the upcoming job, The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will start employing 18,000 junior school intern teachers in September.
According to sources close to the Commission, the employment advertisement might be published as soon as this month after the new CS Education, Julius Ogamba, and CS Treasury, John Mbadi, were sworn in.
President William Ruto signed the Supplementary Appropriations (No. 2) Bill 2024 this week, which mandates the appointment of intern teachers and the permanent appointment of 46,000 currently employed ones.
Budgetary constraints prompted a suspension of the Commission’s plans to confirm the current interns and hire new ones in July following the quashing of the 2024 Finance Bill.
According to Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary (PS) for Basic Education, efforts are underway to hire 18,000 junior and 2,000 main interns this fiscal year, bringing the total number of instructors hired for the Competency Based Assessment (CBC) program to 56,000.
PS Kipsang also revealed that 18,000 new classrooms will be constructed by the government starting in January of next year to house students in Grade 9.

According to him, 7,000 classes are being constructed through CDF, while 11,000 classes are being established with assistance from development partners.
According to him, the government is totally dedicated to CBC’s success and is collaborating with all partners to set up the required infrastructure.
According to Kipsang, every arrangement was made to guarantee a seamless transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10 in 2026.
Speaking at the 96th Kenya Music Festival’s official inauguration in Eldoret, he was introduced by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii.
The one-year Teacher Internship Program is designed to prepare and support individuals who are considering a career in teaching.
The initiative aims to place jobless registered instructors in educational institutions so they can receive coaching, mentorship, and hands-on teaching experience to improve their teaching skills.
TSC new requirements for next Employment
- Application for TSC internship shall strictly be done online.
- To be eligible to serve as intern in primary school one must be a holder of a PTE or DPTE certificate and is registered with TSC.
- Those in junior school must have at least a Diploma and C+ in KCSE with C+ in two teaching subjects.
- They must also be registered with TSC
During verification/ interviews, applicants shall be required to produce the following: –
- A copy of Teacher Registration Certificate/print-out from TSC online portal as evidence of registration as a teacher;
- A copy of National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) card (where applicable)
- A copy of the National Identity Card (ID) or Passport;
- Two (2) colour passport size photographs
- A copy of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) card.
- A copy of Kenya Revenue Authority Personal Identification Number (KRA PIN).
Interns attached to primary schools will earn a monthly stipend of sh 15,000 while those in junior school will get sh 20,000.q
On successful completion of the Internship Programme, teacher interns will be awarded an internship certificate which will carry some marks during their confirmation to permanent terms.
