TSC allows 742 JSS intern teachers back to work after dismissing them.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has put 742 junior school intern teachers back on the payroll who were fired for failing to report for duty.
Following their appearance before TSC’s county-based disciplinary tribunals, the teachers were restored. Information reveals that several interns who neglected to show up for the panels received a number of letters.
The Commission has mandated that the hearing of their appeals be completed by July 15, 2024.
Junior secondary school principals have been instructed by TSC to remove teachers from the online casualty portal and re-enter them.
At the end of August this year, the teachers will once more begin receiving their stipend.
After failing to report to work when classes resumed in the second term and engaging in a walkout to demand their permanent confirmation, the intern teachers and thousands of other teachers were first served with “show cause” letters.
Nevertheless, the Commission instructed the 742 interns to reply to the “show cause” letters within 14 days, but they did not.
Additionally, the instructors refrained from taking part in the TSC-organized subcounty Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) retooling sessions.
They had their names removed from the TSC payroll and were placed under interdict. TSC granted them 21 days to file an appeal.
The teachers would be put back on the payroll, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia disclosed during her speech at the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) convention.
There are 46,000 teachers working as interns at SC now.
In February 2023, 21,550 junior school and 4,000 primary school intern instructors were hired. In April 2023, 450 intern instructors for secondary schools were hired. In September 2023, 18,000 junior school and 2,000 primary school intern instructors were hired.
This year, TSC intends to confirm the intern teachers’ appointments to permanent and pensionable periods (PNP).
