TSC Agrees to Implement Several Demands Issues by KNUT & KUPPET Following Ruto’s Directive.
On Wednesday, the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) declared that it has addressed a few of the important concerns brought out by educators in their correspondence with the commission.
TSC announced in a statement that it had achieved a deal with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) to carry out the second phase of the Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA).
The Commission promised to revisit the standards for career growth and asked instructors to exercise patience since the process was still in its early stages.
The commission also handled other difficulties, such as teachers’ access to both public and private hospitals through the Teachers Medical Scheme.
TSC further said that the government would allocate sufficient funds to equip educators with the necessary tools to execute the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
A third finding of the TSC investigation was that 51,232 instructors had already received promotions. 51,232 instructors are slated for competitive promotions, and an additional 20,000 will be promoted on a common cadre basis each year.
The commission disclosed that the teachers’ unions acknowledged its stance and consented to confer with their internal committees in order to revoke the strike announcement.
“We, therefore, wish to thank the unions for engaging the Commission to ensure non-disruption of learning in schools during the Third Term, 2024,” the TSC said in a statement.
“The TSC wishes to profusely thank the Government for providing adequate resources for the CBA and all other teacher programmes despite the harsh economic environment.”
The announcement from TSC was issued just one hour after KNUT and KUPPET jointly declared that they would not accept the government’s proposals and that they would carry on with the strike.
Less than five days have passed since President William Ruto ordered the Ministry of Treasury, TSC, KUPPET, and KNUT to have talks in order to break the impasse.
“Treasury, TSC, and the teaching fraternity should sit together and look at the possibility of ensuring that we implement our commitment as government,” said President William Ruto.
