Relief for Teachers as Govt Releases Funds for CBA’s Second Phase.
For the purpose of putting the second phase of the Collective Bargaining Agreement into effect on July 1, 2024, the government has set aside Sh13.5 billion.
As instructed by President Wiliam Ruto, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the teachers unions convened strategic negotiations, after which the government released the monies, according to TSC head Nancy Macharia.
Following the issuance of strike notices by the teacher unions, which included the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET), they demanded that the 2021–2025 CBA agreement be fully implemented.
“The Commission is happy to announce that the government has provided funds for the implementation of the second phase of the CBA with effect from July 1, 2024,” she said following today’s meetings.
As a result, Macharia gave the teachers unions instructions to revoke their notices of strike in order to prevent any interruption to the academic program when classes resume next week for the third term.
Since the government has now released funding, “we therefore beseech all our teachers to report to schools on Monday for the start of the Third Term,” she said.
According to Macharia, the Commission also decided to review the career advancement standards to make sure that intern teachers have been onboarded to the permanent and pensionable contract terms during the talks with the teacher unions.
“The ongoing review of the career progression guidelines and the fact that teachers can now access both public and private hospitals under the Teachers Medical Scheme are among the other issues that the trade unions had that the commission resolved,” the spokesperson stated.
The TSC Chief pointed out that the government had supplied funds for teachers to be retrained in order to execute the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), in which the Commission has annually promoted 20,000 teachers on a common cadre and 51,232 teachers under competitive promotions.
President Ruto gave the TSC instructions to negotiate with the teaching unions on June 16, 2024, in order to address issues impacting the welfare of tutors at public schools around the nation.
