The vital financing for important education sectors has been reinstated by the members of parliament. Prior to the hosterity measures, these programs had suffered a sharp loss of Sh23.1 billion.
Under the direction of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, the Budget and Appropriations Committee lowered the overall budget for the year 2024–2025 down from Sh156.4 billion to Sh146.3 billion, a decrease of Sh10.1 billion.
A report presented on Tuesday by Budget and Appropriations Committee member Peter Masara stated that important areas like as free day secondary education, free primary education, and Junior Secondary School (JSS) have been spared from implementation cuts.
The increase mentioned above includes Sh2.4 billion for free day secondary education and Sh11.98 billion for free elementary education.
An additional Sh5 billion has been set aside for the administration of assessments and national exams for nearly 3.5 million students in Form 4, Grades 3, and 6.
The funding also includes Sh3.1 billion for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam and an additional Sh1.9 billion for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).
An additional Sh29.5 billion will be given to the commission for the management of teacher resources; of this amount, Sh17.6 billion will be utilized to transform 46,000 intern teachers into permanent and pensionable positions, and another Sh11.9 billion would be allocated for teachers’ health insurance.
The budget for research and higher education would also increase by Sh1.15 billion, totaling Sh120.4 billion.
Additionally, this group made a suggestion for financing the school lunch program in order to support continuing efforts to lessen detrimental effects on the nation’s economic stability, nutrition, and attendance at school.
Instructors will also have the opportunity to use the CBA.
