Teachers have threatened to delay the reopening of schools in around three weeks, and they have given the government notice that they will go on strike.
The government is requested by the two major teachers’ unions, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), to honor the second part of a signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Although the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the teachers’ employer, did not pay the new rates in July, the CBA increased teacher compensation starting last month. And in response, the unions have issued a warning that on August 26, the opening day, their instructors would not report to work.
In addition, the union leaders have promised not to consider holding new negotiations to change the CBA with the TSC or the Ministry of Education. They claim that they and the government legitimately negotiated and signed the agreement.
Additionally, they intend to hire 20,000 intern instructors on a permanent basis. The junior secondary schools will be able to operate successfully as a result, they claim. Many schools are experiencing teacher shortages as a result of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), which has been in place since its adoption.
Julius Ogamba, the recently appointed Cabinet Secretary for Education, will have a full desk, including the impending strike. In order to prevent a teachers’ strike during his first few days in office, he needs to move swiftly to include the National Treasury, TSC, and the unions.
If the teachers follow through on their threat, the strike will have an impact on the academic schedule, including the third-term national exams. Any changes made to the schedule could compromise the educational goals of students across the board.
CS Ogamba has to give the docket his all in order to guarantee that everyone is studying at a high standard. His government must place a high premium on the welfare of teachers and provide them with fair compensation. Some educators have made it their life’s work to make sure that all of their pupils learn, no matter what.
Teachers in impoverished and marginalized areas are among them. They travel great miles on foot to get to their schools, where they work to uplift underprivileged kids. It’s true that certain principals of schools have made a special effort to cover or waive the tuition for underprivileged but intelligent students.
Narratives abound of educators reaching out to the community for assistance in providing for impoverished pupils. Although all Kenyan students should receive high-quality education from the government, the Ministry of Education and TSC should constantly recognize and honor dedicated educators.
Additionally, some teachers are renowned for raising their pupils’ achievement in particular topics. Numerous schools that aspire to be the best call them. CS Ogamba must constantly figure out how to honor and inspire each and every instructor. Let him start by addressing the union leaders for the time being.
