Knec announces the new sum it would pay KCSE and KPSEA invigilators in 2024.
The amount that the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) would pay its outsourced professionals this year has been adjusted.
Teachers, drivers, and security guards are among the professionals contacted. Teachers have contracts as invigilators, supervisors, and center managers.
While Knec covers the cost of transportation, it does not cover the services provided by center managers, supervisors, or invigilators.
Teachers will get slightly different compensation this year due to the administration of national exams and assessments.
The modifications come in response to secondary school teachers’ requests for more funding to administer the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, which are set to start on October 22, 2024.
The teachers requested a 750–900% increase in their out-of-workstation allowances through the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).
In a letter to Julius Ogamba, cabinet secretary for education, Kuppet secretary-general Akello Misori suggested raising the invigilator rate from Sh400 to Sh3,000 per day, a 75% increase.
The union wanted principals, who also serve as exam center managers during exam season, to be paid Sh4,500 per day, and supervisors to be paid Sh3,500 per day, a 778 percent increase from their present salary of Sh450.
Since the principals currently receive Sh500 per day, this would represent a 900 percent increase.
“During the next exams, our members have pledged to reject the current compensation structure. As the Cabinet secretary overseeing the budget for the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), we implore you to assist the council in paying teachers in accordance with the Public Service Human Resource Policies and Procedures Manual, which serves as the standard for the entire government,” Mr. Misori wrote in the letter.
