Teachers in the nation’s junior secondary schools (JSS) are requesting that their employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), move them to new work stations as soon as possible after confirmation.
In response to concerns about a tense working relationship between JSS interns and head teachers in the primary schools where JSS is based, the Commission last Friday, October 11, 2024, began the confirmation of 46,000 JSS interns on permanent and pensionable terms.
According to several educators who spoke to Education News, a recent incident in which a JSS teacher got into a heated argument with the head teacher of a JSS school in Nyanza was a replica of what was occurring in many schools across the nation, and they were afraid of facing disciplinary action from the school heads once it was confirmed.
To improve the already strained relationship with heads of institutions, TSC could think about moving some of us to alternative working stations when we are confirmed on permanent and pensionable conditions from the current stations.
According to one of the JSS teachers at one of the recruitment centers, “some of us are afraid that the bosses will now have express leeway to institute disciplinary mechanisms over us unlike when we were on internship.”
He went on to say that the instructors had faced many difficulties during their internship, chief among them being a lack of staff and ongoing competition with the head teachers.
Teachers have also been dealing with issues like inadequate resources, uncomfortable teaching new subjects because of a lack of training, and high student numbers that exceed the capability of available teachers.
As per the TSC roadmap for teachers’ confirmation, TSC Sub-County Directors are calling teachers at different recruitment centers today, October 15, 2024, to fill up TSC employment forms.
All of the selected applicants’ employment offer letters, which have been signed by TSC SCDs, will be delivered to their respective schools tomorrow, October 16, 2024.
