CS Ogamba, students to receive HELB funds in two days.
Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) monies will be disbursed to students in two days, subject to processing, according to Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba.
This comes after he verified that the Ministry had obtained money from the National Treasury designated for the loan purse.
The comments were made by CS Ogamba at a meeting between the Ministry and the leadership of the Kenya University Student Organization (KUSO), which was attended by university leaders, education stakeholders, and Higher Education PS Dr. Beatrice Inyangala.
Kennedy Kusero, a KUSO spokesperson, praised the students for their understanding and tolerance during the wait for the payout.
“Your perseverance has not gone unappreciated, and we at KUSO promise that we will never waver in our commitment to fighting for the rights and well-being of all of our comrades in any manner we can,” he stated.
This comes weeks after students protested against the new university finance model, arguing that it denied the majority of students access to higher education, and demanded that the monies be released immediately.
The High Court issued an injunction to temporarily freeze the model while a case filed on October 13, 2023, is heard and decided.
Boaz Waruku, the Students Caucus, the Elimu Bora Working Group, and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) filed the lawsuit, claiming that the funding mechanism was discriminatory because it prevented thousands of students from pursuing higher education.
